Mayo Clinic Presents Discovery Oasis: Global Innovation for Healthcare

This week's Global Chamber Phoenix monthly globinar covered various topics with a keynote presentation on Mayo Clinic's expansion plans and the Discovery Oasis project. In addition we heard updates from the U.S. Commercial Service on export assistance and trade missions. Members shared new opportunities and needs they have right now, and making strategic business connections in metro Phoenix and across borders through virtual platform.

Mayo Clinic's Economic Development Initiatives

Kelly Sandin shared her background, including her early work at SkySong interacting with Global Chamber in our early days, along with her current role at Mayo Clinic, where she leads economic development initiatives. She discussed the transformation of the Mayo Clinic's Phoenix campus, highlighting its growth and impact on the surrounding area. Kelly also mentioned her recent promotion and expressed interest in staying connected with the group.

Mayo Clinic's Arizona Expansion Plans

Kelly shared that Mayo Clinic has two main locations in Arizona, with a small hospital footprint but a significant global presence. Kelly highlighted the clinic's recent $2 billion investment in Arizona, which includes expanding its hospital facilities. She also introduced Discovery Oasis, a 120-acre biotech innovation hub being developed on Mayo Clinic property in north Phoenix. Kelly emphasized the opportunity for companies to engage with Mayo Clinic and participate in this new bioscience community, which aims to advance healthcare and patient care in Arizona.

U.S. Commercial Service Export Assistance

Leandro Solorzano is the Director for the U.S. Commercial Service in Arizona. He explained the agency's role in assisting companies with exporting, including business matchmaking and navigating international regulations. He highlighted their network of offices at U.S. embassies and consulates, which provide local support and market insights. Leandro noted that while the agency cannot provide information on tariffs, they can refer companies to the appropriate public affairs office for policy-related concerns. He also mentioned that the U.S. Commercial Service has been affected by staff reductions, which has impacted their operations in Arizona but not overseas.

Roundtable

Anna Seedhill, a new member of the Global Chamber, shared her background in waste-to-energy projects, accounting, and bookkeeping, particularly for healthcare companies, and announced plans to expand her accounting services in Arizona.

The globinar also featured introductions and discussions from various members, including Anna, Benjamin, Marc, and others, highlighting their expertise and contributions to their respective fields. Anna shared her experience in bookkeeping and accounting for small and medium-sized businesses, while Benjamin discussed his work in commercial real estate, specializing in spaceport developments and licensing.

Marc Cohen expressed his passion for connecting businesses globally and mentioned his involvement with leadership programs. The group also discussed upcoming events, including Mandela Day and the Women in Global Leadership event in August emphasizing the importance of staying connected and supporting each other in challenging times.
