Sri Lanka-US Trade Opportunities with Reduced Tariffs that Create Competitive Advantage
The tariffs on Sri Lankan exports to the United States have recently undergone a significant revision. The previous rate of 44%—a major challenge for Sri Lankan exporters—has been reduced to 20%. This adjustment has not only eased pressure on Sri Lankan businesses but, in certain cases, positioned them more competitively than some regional exporters. Sri Lankan exporters are a reliable, high-quality, and cost-competitive sourcing option, and these tariff changes are creating a second look by buyers in the US.
In April we covered some exporting opportunities from Sri Lanka here
What This Means for U.S. Companies
- Lower Costs: Reduced tariffs translate to better pricing for U.S. buyers.
- Reliable Partners: Sri Lanka has a strong track record in industries such as apparel, rubber-based products, food & beverages, ICT services, and gems & jewelry.
- Strategic Location: Situated at the crossroads of major shipping routes, Sri Lanka offers efficient access to both Asian and Middle Eastern markets.
Next Steps: Building Connections
Leaders on both sides see this as a unique window of opportunity to strengthen bilateral trade ties between our two countries. To make this practical and meaningful, we invite members of our Chamber who are actively seeking sourcing opportunities to share:
- The products or service sectors they are most interested in.
Based on this, we are ready to organize a focused platform—such as a webinar or virtual B2B meeting—to connect U.S. companies directly with vetted Sri Lankan exporters.
A Foundation for Long-Term Partnership
Beyond immediate business linkages, we believe this initiative can pave the way for a stronger and enduring trade partnership between our chambers and our members. Together, we can turn this tariff shift into a strategic advantage for businesses on both sides.
