Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in the Global Marketplace

Diversity Equality and Inclusion (DEI) is an exciting hot topic with the entry of Vice President Kamala Harris to the 2024 U.S. Presidential race. Democrats and Independents universally love her! Republican party leaders complained that VP Harris as the Democratic nominee is a ‘DEI pick’. Republican-backed Project 2025 seeks to eliminate Diversity-Equity-Inclusion programs in the federal government and at universities.

Our recent Global Chamber New York City "DEI in the Global Marketplace" globinar panel explored the evolving landscape of DEI. Five top executives addressed DEI in their careers and how recent changes in government, courts rulings and corporate guidelines have impacted their DEI programs. The discussion covered the type of measurement and evaluation needed to improve DEI initiatives, and the ongoing debate around terminology (DEI vs Diversity and Inclusion), and more.

Panelists mentioned the term Diversity Revenue and Inclusion (DRI) to emphasize the connection of the initiative to tangible business outcomes and capture the attention of CEOs. We have to push back on politicization of DEI. Its connection with identity and meritocracy is creating a polarized view between different political and ideological groups. The panel also highlighted the growing cultural divide and its impact on DEI initiatives with media often exacerbating and distorting the issues.

For all of us doing global business, we know that leadership that nurtures diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging creates innovation, global business growth and success... and so it's important to revisit these issues for everyone to be grounded, and to continue make progress. The world is diverse... and teams - including management teams - that are diverse are naturally more adept to create success.

Our speakers included:

- Tawana Bain, CEO of American Clean Resources Group, is a leading pioneer and one of the first black female presidents in the male dominated field of mining reclamation. Ms. Bain is active in philanthropic and government relations through her work as Founder of Derby Diversity Week and has been recognized for building equity initiatives for black entrepreneurs and other marginalized groups.

- Dr. Daisy Khan is founder of Women's Islamic Initiative in Spirituality and Equality (WISE), a global network dedicated to peacebuilding, gender equality, and human dignity. She is an author, bridge builder, activities and well recognized speaker.

- Luiza Dreasher is President and CEO of Mastering Cultural Differences, where she provides incredible insight into cultural differences impacting today’s diverse workplaces as well as best practices for increased performance in a global economy. She is originally from Brazil.

- Francisco Gomez is the founder and CEO of Factum Global. He is an expert in strategy development and business planning for companies and nonprofit organizations, with a particular expertise in global expansion and a native of Columbia.

- Carissa Begonia, is the CEO and business coach at Consciousxchange, an equity-focused coaching and consulting company with a mission to help BIPOC entrepreneurs secure time. She (she/her) is a second-generation Filipina American daughter of immigrants.
