Most companies have a short bench of international players with the right business experiences across a variety of cultures and borders.
And yet unfortunately we often see a CEO or other top executive who has good experience NOT expose their team members to the experiences they'll need to develop.
Another issue is that not everyone is interested in international business, and so without the higher-level inspiration for more on the team to get involved, many do not.
My own international career started because none of the more senior managers who should have taken a position in Asia did not, leaving the young guy (me) to do it.
The results of too few professionals and executives being exposed to international business?
The experienced business men and women don't have enough talent surrounding them... so there's less brainstorming, less support, less good ideas and less success.
There's still simply not enough priority given to global business by most companies. Even companies having some global success are challenged to build out the team, because it takes time, and often other, more local priorities take time precedence.
Are you an experienced global business person with the ability to develop international skills within your team?
Do it, and do it today. Build your global bench.
