How Globies Will (Again) Save the World

By Doug Bruhnke

There's plenty of nationalism, nativism, populism and related ism's going around the world these days. When people seek answers, they often look inward and blame others on the outside. It's a centuries old process not limited to any country or culture.

So more than ever, globies need to bring more money in the front door through exports, foreign tourism and foreign direct investment (FDI) to overcome inward looking.

So we know that the ultimate winner will be good old capital-ISM, driven and executed by the global tribe. Because it's already happening.

Business folks make money. And sure they'll protect their current pie, but they'll always want to get their fingers into plenty of other, growing PIES, wherever they are. Always have, always will! And they're doing it today while you're reading this article.

Think about this...

Imagine your country as a room full of people. It starts with all the doors closed. If everyone just trades with each other, wealth is only redistributed, not increased overall. That's classic inward looking.

But it won't take long for a globie to look out the window and says, 'hey, look at those folks out there. Let's invite them in (tourism, FDI), or sell to them (exports)!'

That's the way the room gets richer... bringing money in from OUTSIDE. And so it's natural that all us globies get that and are respectful of different people and cultures. We want their money! ;-) OK, kind of joking there, but money is a great motivator, isn't it?

Globies (and successful business leaders) find a way to work with people of every country and culture.

Today no matter what country you live in, most people live SOMEWHERE ELSE. And most of the world's wealth is SOMEWHERE ELSE. So it's natural to throw the welcome mat out and besides doing the RIGHT THING and being nice, it grows business, too.

Everyone wins and gets wealthier.

And so all this talk about closing borders and reversing globalization is a momentary over-reaction that is not sustainable. It's like TPP. If the U.S. decides to dump out, the other 11 countries won't stop... and they might even involve China next time. Time and the world marches on.

Hey if you thought globalization was bad, wait till you experience deglobalization... it wouldn't be pretty. Read more

And so we just don't see the populism against being global winning. It can't. It's a room full of folks trading with each other. It isn't sustainable.

Sure as the day is long, trade is going to happen. And the folks who do it and welcome others, WIN. It's already happening - the question is - are you part of it?

99% of opportunities are outside your metro. 85% of business in the next 5 years is outside the U.S.

How much of your time, treasury and talent are you investing in growing in other metros and other countries?

It's important for companies and countries because it's a high return on investment for both.

Here are some examples of trade data for the U.S. I thoroughly expect that no matter what the politicians try to do, global business folks will get the job done. It would be great to get some help from them, and hopefully we will. At least they should stay out of the way.

Exports

U.S. exports were few in the 1950's when the market was enough to sustain business growth. Over time businesses started to understand the value of exporting, and have for the most part continued the progress. Exports have started to flatten these past few years but they will still account for nearly 12 million jobs in the U.S. and account for 15% of the GDP. Over 1 in 5 jobs in the U.S. are related to trade. It's important. See data from 1950 and the past few years below.

1950 to Present, and Last 10 Years

Foreign Direct Investment

FDI accounts for 12 million jobs in the U.S. - 6 million jobs directly with foreign-owned companies, and another 6 million jobs that are related to the work by those companies. Employment in the U.S. of these companies is only 5% of the workforce, but these companies account for 15% of the capital investment and 20% of U.S. exports. For more information. read HERE.

Tourism

Foreign tourists in the U.S. contribute $3B per day in spending, and the average household in the U.S. pays $1200 less per year because of the money brought in by international tourists. Tourism accounts for 3% of the U.S. GDP - and important contributor.

So let's keep the welcome mat out and swept clean.

No matter where you live, bring more people into the room and you, and your country, will benefit.
