Opportunities in LatAm 2023: A Positive Outlook

By Cesar Trabanco · Global Chamber

Recently we interviewed several Latin American entrepreneur leaders about their ideas and vision for 2023. We began the conversation with Rafael Torres Morales, founder of the RIN - Red Internacional de Negocios, based in Peru. Despite the recent political instability in his country, Rafael is optimistic about what seems to be an interesting government transition for the local business community.

Among several opportunities for the region, Rafael mentioned:

- The resurgence of tourism, post-Covid.

- The construction sector, due to a deficit of real estate projects.

- The service industry in general that always collaborates with the economy of Peru.

The conversation continued with Erwin Padinger, President of Meditar S.A. Alta Complejidad Médica. Erwin told us that the continuous devaluation of its currency against the U.S. dollar represents business opportunities in various sectors, such as the health industry and medical tourism. An interesting opportunity that Erwin mentioned is the lack cybersecurity solutions for cyber threads that are affecting hospitals and medical professionals, putting lives at risk. He indicates that this represents a large market for security companies.

As for his country, he tells us that it will go through an electoral process at the end of 2023, which could represent big changes. Erwin ends by talking about the mental health pandemic that has arisen as a result of the COVID pandemic. This is one that affects individuals personally and professionally, representing opportunities for the industrial psychology sector.

The last main panelist was Fernando Cevallos from F&C Consulting Group in Mexico City. Fernando, whose firm specializes in offering solutions on ethics and integrity, mentions that both public and private sectors are increasingly requesting compliance and anti-corruption certifications.

Specifically, he mentions the Fintech sector and the volatility of cryptocurrencies, which still represent a great opportunity that transcends borders. Fernando mentions that there is still a way to improve on the issue of fraud and corruption, understanding that the private company will be the leader, and will guide the public sector to combat these problems we face in the region.

His presentation ends with a topic with which everyone seems to agree: remote work, mobility and online education. The Human Resources sector has been affected by the brain drain and high competitiveness. Latin American companies have to look for options to attract and keep their talent. Among them, Fernando mentions, are flexibility at work and continuing training for employees' professional growth.

Some important contributions by the rest of the participants were:

The importance of equity and diversity, as well as environmental, social and economic issues addressed by Noris Steenstrup, who divides time for Global Chamber between Mexico and Costa Rica.

The opportunities brought by nostalgic brands, which can represent a very large market in regions such as the US, Canada and Europe, where many Latinos emigrate. This is a subject dominated by Carolina Moreira, Executive Director of Global Chamber in El Salvador. Amanda Rodas, also from El Salvador, made her contribution on the subject of advertising and communications.

Rafael Ferruz Osa. from Global Chamber Madrid, also comments on the opportunities in renewable energy and tourism that are experienced in Spain, despite certain current problems with his government.

Lastly, Christian I. Aguirre Garza I. Aguirre, from Global Chamber Hermosillo, emphasized the importance of northern Mexico as a trade corridor for LatAm exports to the United States, particularly to states with the largest Hispanic population. This was emphasized by Arturo Zamarripa from Global Chamber Guanajuato, who vouched for the economic growth they are having in Central Mexico.

Without a doubt, our LatAm market is one to watch carefully in 2023 and at Global Chamber we will continue to provide opportunities to expand business in the region. We're planning more regular events from the region in 2023 as we continue to grow in Latin America, to support member growth.
