Women in Global Leadership: Int'l Trade, Exporting and Foreign Direct Investment in New York

As part of World Trade Week NYC, Global Chamber® held the collaborative globinar: "Women in Global Leadership: International Trade, Exporting and Foreign Direct Investment in New York". The event was co-hosted by the International Women's Entrepreneurial Challenge (IWEC).

The program was introduced by Nancy Ploeger, EVP of the IWEC Foundation. The program was moderated by me, Susan Assadi, Executive Director, Global Chamber®, New York City.

We featured three keynote speakers: Carmela Mammas, Director, New York US Export Assistance Center, U.S. Commercial Service: Naomi Fujiki, Vice President & Chief of Staff, Partnerships at the New York City Economic Development Corporation; and Patricia Bayley, Vice President Digital & New Media Development for Empire State Development.

The discussion centered primarily on foreign direct investment opportunities in New York City and New York State, and guidance for New York State exporters on their global journey. Biographies

Carmela Mammas - U.S. Commercial Service

Carmela joined the Commercial Service in 1992 and has been working with U.S. exporters for over 30 years. She leads a team of Senior International Trade Specialists to assist New York City and Long Island firms succeed globally. Working closely with U.S. Commercial Service colleagues in over 75 countries, her team focuses on counseling firms in high export growth industries, including advanced manufacturing, apparel, aerospace, architecture and engineering, consumer goods, disaster resilience, education services, information technology and communications, financial services, processed food and beverage, franchising, green technology, healthcare and beauty, media and entertainment, safety and security, smart cities, and travel and tourism.

Carmela serves as the U.S. government’s liaison to the United Nations procurement division. Her office is also co-located in downtown Manhattan with the Northeast Regional Office of the Export Import Bank of the United States and a U.S. Small Business Administration Regional Trade Finance Manager to provide a “one stop shop” to U.S. exporters. She also serves as the Executive Secretary of the NY District Export Council, where private sector members are appointed by the U.S. Secretary of Commerce. Carmela is the recipient of the Gold Medal Award for sustaining the mission of export promotion in the wake of Hurricane Sandy that caused unprecedented damage in New York and New Jersey.

Patricia Bayley - Empire State Development

Patricia Bayley is the Vice President Digital & New Media Development for Empire State Development. Patricia works closely with technology and media companies establishing and expanding in across the state. She has also worked with the State’s Motion Picture & Television Development team (MPTV), partnering with major studios and stakeholders to help increase diversity within the state’s film and television industry. Prior to coming to ESD, Patricia worked in international development within the technology and creative industries at the British Consulate in New York and at the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYC EDC). She also has experience working at digital advertising agencies and traditional media firms in both strategy and content production.

Naomi Fujiki - New York City Economic Development Corporation

Naomi Fujiki is the Vice President of Strategic & International Partnerships at New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC). NYCEDC is a mission-driven, nonprofit organization that works with and for communities across New York City to strengthen neighborhoods and create good jobs. Naomi oversees a team that collaborates with international and domestic partners to bring businesses, jobs, and opportunities to New York City. Prior to NYCEDC, Naomi worked in the international development and impact investing sectors.

Susan Assadi - Executive Director, Global Chamber® New York City

Susan co-founded GAPR in 1992, a PR firm with an emphasis on expert and thought leadership campaigns. She is a highly respected national media strategist who helps her clients to be promoted to the national media, weaving in compelling stories that resonate with top media outlets. Her campaigns catalyze her clients into leaders of their respective fields. Susan also has over four decades representing non-profits, leading public companies and subject matter experts. Her firm’s campaigns are fresh, creative, tech savvy, and innovative, a cocktail that engenders powerful results. She co-founded Safed House, a non-profit, that provides a welcoming place for refugees and recent immigrants to share their stories.

Prior to founding her own PR firm, Susan was the publicist for PBS MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour, She received a Master's Degree in Fine Arts from New York University, and obtained a Bachelor's Degree from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri.
