Doing Business in Tokyo, Osaka, Fukuoka and Across Japan

By Alexandra Scott · Global Chamber®

We're growing in Japan! Watch for 12 new chapters in cities from Fukuoka in Kyushu, up through Honshu, to Sapporo in Hokkaido!

We held a globinar "Doing Business in Tokyo, Osaka, Fukuoka and Across Japan" with regional experts discussing new opportunities and ways to enter and grow in the market there. Global Chamber® is pleased to host extraordinary experts on the Japanese market who shared their perspectives and unique viewpoints as business leaders there.

Listen to the conversation on ongoing trends and opportunities HERE.

I led off the conversation with some information about the cities and related business information.

One of my favorite parts of this program was when I handed off to Catherine O'Connell, who shared a 'top 10' tips from having worked for decades in Japan, on how to be successful. It's excellent! Thank you, Catherine for generously sharing your wisdom with all of us.

In summary, Catherine's top 10...

  1. Come here (to Japan), to absorb and learn.
  2. Take time, extra time, to connect and build the groundwork.
  3. Find the right patterns with cultural fit to you and the market.
  4. Create your own unique Japan story, to resonate locally.
  5. Understand how the Japan market appreciates excellence.
  6. There is no one rule - make the extra effort to succeed.
  7. Never ever skip on quality (even the packaging matters).
  8. Always have the highest integrity, own up to any mistakes.
  9. Build and honor the special relationships you'll need.
  10. Give and receive - and remember to follow introduction protocol.
